"Thriller It's not only a movie” Exhibition – Feel the horror and anxiety by your heart

Nowadays, we depend too much on words or texts. Sometimes we should receive the message of a piece of works by our hearts. „Thriller It's not only a movie” Exhibition provides us a chance to practice this type of appreciation. Once you have entered the exhibition, you can feel the anxiety immediately. Among the seven exhibits, there are different mediums of works ranging from picture to model, object to video. Like its name – you can feel the sense of thriller not only in movies but also other mediums.

There is a pamphlet available which may help you to understand the exhibits more (If you want to take it home, it costs.). However, as I have mentioned before, sometimes we depend too much on words. What is the meaning of art when we have to read the description in order to know its message? My recommendation is: Try to look at all the exhibits first. After having your own thoughts on the exhibits, read the pamphlet to see what kinds of message the artists want to deliver. However, according to the famous quotes of Roland Barthes , „the death of Author” – once a piece of works is produced, its meaning is designed by readers but not the author. It is absolutely fine for you to have your own thoughts which is different from that of artists.

I was impressed by a few exhibits. First of all, once you have opened the door, you can see a piece of installation art, titled „The art of difficult Choice I”, in front of you.

It was created by Izabella Gustowska in 2006. This piece of art showed different human behaviors, gestures and emotions in movies. Besides watching the facial expression of the characters shown and the creepy green light in the works, you can also try to find out how many movies you can recognize. If you can recognize more than five, you do watch a lot of thriller movies!

The installation art is directly related to movies, meanwhile some of the works in the gallery are not. Take a look on your right hand side.

Don't freak out. – it is just a model. No one is harmed. It is the works from Leszek Kuaflewski, titled „Cement”. Do you find this model familiar – with his hands tied at the back and with a bag on his head? It might have appeared in a lot of mafia movies when the gang is torturing the undercover.Take a closer look at the model you will discover that this model was tied by a bunch of cable.

It then gave me new thoughts : the computer and the internet is tying him instead of human being. There is a monitor which hangs around the model's neck showing a video. The video showed the most private part of a male body and forced it to speak through a microphone. Honestly I cannot think of the intention of artist of showing the video. However, I came up with my own thoughts. Although the head of the model is hidden, he still needs to show his private part to others. It is similar to the virtual world that although no one know your true identity on the internet, others can still reveal your secrets. The artist mocks the virtual world in disguise of a scene in thriller movies.

I have not expected that the „Thriller” exhibition have the connection with thriller movies in such ways. However, it does give me an opportunity to rethink the meaning of „thriller” as well as the usage of words. This exhibition showed me that, not only sound and words can show sense of horror but also light and shadow without sound.
